“I revealed myself to those who did not ask for me; I was found by those who did not seek me. To a nation that did not call on my name, I said, ‘Here am I, here am I.’ All day long I have held out my hands to an obstinate people, who walk in ways not good, pursuing their own imaginations – a people who continually provoke me to my very face, offering sacrifices in gardens and burning incense on altars of brick; who sit among the graves and spend their nights keeping secret vigil; who eat the flesh of pigs, and whose pots hold broth of impure meat; who say, ‘Keep away; don’t come near me, for I am too sacred for you!'”
I hate answering the phone when telemarketers call! One of my biggest pet peeves is when I get a night at home with nothing to do but hang out with my family and then a telemarketer calls or someone comes to my door trying to sell something. I just want to yell at them, “Are you crazy?!? Why in the world are you calling me??? I don’t care what you’re selling, I don’t want or need it!” I want to hang the phone up and make jokes about them calling me to mask the irrational anger I feel. And then I’m glad I never hear from them again.
I bet you’ve never felt that way, right? 🙂 Never…
I wonder what they’re actually trying to sell me… I ‘m usually in a hurry to get off the phone, so they almost never get a chance to actually get the sales pitch in. I sure hope it’s not something I actually need… If there is something I actually, legitimately need, I hope they’ll call back or give it a second try. I hope they’ll do more than the bare minimum… Go the second mile… If I actually need it, then I want them to chase me with the truth until I understand it.
If you count yourself as a disciple of Jesus Christ, then you’re trying to “give” Jesus to a world that has no idea they actually need Him. People will ignore you, hang up on you, walk away from you and be rude to you. They will laugh at you, joke about you, lie about you and humiliate you. You’ll be tempted to give up after the first try, after you “do the minimum.” You’ll be tempted to say, “Jesus loves you,” and walk away with a feeling of empty satisfaction.
Resist the temptation to be a spiritual telemarketer! God revealed Himself to a world that didn’t ask for Him or even want Him. Then He pursued that world to the cross, the tomb and the ends of the earth. That’s the message that began on Christmas. That’s the message you’re giving away. That’s the message your neighbors need you to tell them… They just don’t know it yet.
