Tonight, I got a call from a student who needed help. He had been driving through the country on his way to the church and was forced to take an unfamiliar road due to construction. He had a vague idea of where he was going, but wasn’t confident in the road he was on. Long story short, he ended up driving through a stop sign, across a road, down a ditch and out into the middle of a bean field.
Check out the picture at the bottom of the post and feel free to laugh – I did. 🙂
When I stopped laughing, I had to ask, “Dude, what happened?” Well, he went through the whole story and based his entire defense on “I didn’t know there would be a stop sign there.”
In all honesty, it’s a legitimate statement. I mean, I’ve been there… Driving unfamiliar territory, distracted by new scenery, surprised by a stop sign around the curve.
As I was helping get the car back out of the field, though, I couldn’t help but see a picture of so many lives.
We live in unfamiliar territory, surrounded by so much to look at and just don’t recognize the stop signs that God throws out in front of us. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve sent my life flying off a cliff simply because I blinked when I should’ve braked.
Today, my friend got lucky and suffered nothing more than a wounded ego. We’re not all that lucky though… Spiritual sickness, emotional brokeness, relational destruction and physical pain are waiting at the bottom of the cliff all too often.
Stop signs are universal… Red. Octagon. S. T. O. P.
It’s our reactions that are varied… Obedient. Rebellious. Complacent.
Whatever point you’re at in life, don’t get so carried away that you miss the stop signs. You’ll probably end up with much worse than a wounded ego…
