2 Samuel 15:6 (read all of chapter 15 here)
Absalom behaved in this way toward all the Israelites who came to the king asking for justice, and so he stole the hearts of the people of Israel.
To steal the hearts of Israel, Absalom copied the patter that Satan’s used since the dawn of creation. It’s worked time and time again, beginning with Adam and Eve in the garden. If you’re not careful, you’ll fall into the trap because he IS gunning for you. Of that you can be sure…
- Absalom interrupted people’s journey to the king.
Satan will do whatever is necessary to get in your way. He’ll throw up roadblocks in your family, at your job, through your computer, even at your church. He’ll convince you that you don’t really need to go to the King. He’ll whisper that it’s a waste of time, that you can handle life yourself. He’ll orchestrate sickness, pain and death just to stall your enthusiasm. Anything to keep you from the King.
- Absalom lied about the king’s availability.
Satan will tell you the King doesn’t really care. He’ll spare no expense to convince you that the King has abandoned you. His message is, “The King is too busy… He’s sitting on His throne, dealing with more important things than you. He doesn’t have time for you and He can’t be bothered with your petty junk.”
- Absalom made attractive and unattainable promises.
Satan will tell you that the King can never deliver what he can. The King might promise eternal life, but Satan can offer immediate fun. The King’s vow is never-ending, but Satan’s is momentarily exhilirating. The King’s covenant is slow-developing, but Satan’s is instantaneous. He is well aware that mmediate rewards are inherently attractive to an impulsive culture.
- Absalom manipulated human emotions.
Satan is a prowling lion, looking for someone to devour and emotions are incredibly easy prey. We were created to feel love, joy, sadness, compassion, empathy, excitement, disappointment and so much more. We were created to be emotional creatures and to the Deceiver, that makes us an easy mark. Satan will promise love, acceptance and whatever else will flip our emotional switch and get his foot in the door of our hearts.
Make no mistake: Satan is in a battle to steal your heart from the King who created and sacrificed for you. Sidestep him and cling to the King!
