1 Kings 19:13
Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
Elijah’s running for his life and stops on the side of a mountain to hide and rest. God shows up like a gentle whisper right after shaking the mountain with wind, fire and an earthquake. And after all that, what does He say?
He says… “What in the world are you doing here?”
He tells Elijah to leave the safety of his hiding spot and get back to work. It’s time to stop hiding, stop whining and go back the way he came. He has work to do and God has plans he’s never guessed at.
How often are we guilty of creating safe places and then hiding in them? I wonder if the security of my routine is actually nothing more than an excuse to hide from riskier work – crucial work?
I am praying that God would show up and deconstruct the bubble I’ve built for myself. Whether He shows up in an awesome display of power or a quiet display of grace, I want to be conscious of His call to step outside my cave and into His mission.
There’s work to be done…
