Throughout this week, I’ll be sharing simple verses that have rocked my perspective on life and faith, with just a short note. My hope is that God will move in a similar way in your heart…
“The news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding country. John’s disciples told him about all these things. Calling two of them, he sent them to the Lord to ask, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?'” -Luke 7:17-19
I have a bad habit… I overthink things and, in my head I make plans that create unrealistic expectations. I decide how I hope God will show up and then I work along that timeline.
But sometimes – actually, most of the time – God shows up in exactly the way I LEAST expected. I’ll be disappointed one night and then totally and completely surprised and blown away the next night. My greatest plans will “flop” one Sunday and God will use my quickly thrown together thoughts to break down wall after wall the next weekend.
And I’m often left like John’s disciples… “Is this really the Holy Spirit? Cause I didn’t really expect this…” “Is this really the Messiah? Cause I expected something a little…bigger…”
Tonight was one of those nights… I’ve been consistently praying the same prayer for the same person over the past 5 years and time after time, I’ve been convinced it would never be answered. I’ve thought we were on the verge of breakthrough before but it’s not happened. I’ve been sure we were getting somewhere before but I’ve always been disappointed.
And, then, tonight, when I was least expecting it, there it was, right in front of me. It doesn’t make any sense… Every sign was pointing away from it happening. The environment was right, attitudes were negative, tensions were high. But right then, in that moment, when it SEEMED impossible, THAT’S when God moved.
Because that’s what He does.
How are you creating space for God to unexpectedly show up and move in your life and relationships?
